Extended Deadline MIW Program

The Michigan in Washington program has extended its application deadline until March 8th for Fall 2023 and early admission to Winter 2024. Applications are available on M-Compass.

FUNDING IS AVAILABLE. MIW scholarships do not need to be applied for, if you are admitted to the program you automatically qualify for funding. All funding is based on financial needs.  

What is Michigan in Washington:

The MIW program offers an opportunity for 20 students each semester (Fall and Winter), from any major, to spend the semester in Washington D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest. Students work four days a week (32 hours), attend an elective one evening a week, a research course on Friday mornings, and explore the city on weekends.

 Who Should Apply:

MIW is open to 3rd and 4th-year students. If you are interested in learning outside of a typical academic setting, while experiencing the vibrant city life of Washington, D.C., we strongly encourage you to apply. We seek students who are serious about exploring the reach of their academic skills, and we work to help students find fulfilling and cutting-edge internships in their field of choice. 

Students are free to pursue internships of their own choosing. Some examples of internships: 

House Judiciary Committee; the Department of Justice; Senators and Representatives on Capitol Hill; Middle East Institute; USAID; Smithsonian; D.C. Public Defender Service; National Women’s Law Center; Federal Communications Commission; CNN; Meet the Press; Democratic National Committee Brookings Institute; SEC, Chamber of Commerce; Treasury Department; Federal Trade Commission; National Defense University; Truman Security Project; Human Rights Watch; Center for American Progress; Amnesty International; Center for Strategic and International Studies; Environmental Law Institute; Department of Justice Environmental Enforcement; National Arbor Foundation; Environmental Protection Agency.
