AURN Audio Journalism Internship, Summer 2022

Paid internship

Location: 2250 E Devon Ave Ste 150, Des Plaines, IL 60018 (Chicago suburbs)

Part time: 20 hours/week, 12 weeks Late May-Mid August (start/end date can be adjusted if necessary)

Whether it’s a radio news release, story segment, or scripted headlines, writing for audio is challenging. Audio requires more description than video because your audience can’t rely on pictures to understand what’s happening. It requires more clarity than print because your audience can’t go back and re-read what they’ve just heard. This internship is right for you if you would like to further develop your audio writing skills in a real-world setting, where 5+ million listeners will hear your pieces each week.

AURN produces two, nationally syndicated public affairs radio shows, Viewpoints Radio and Radio Health Journal, airing on 840 and 630 stations across the country, respectively. The programs are also posted to several major podcast platforms, including Spotify, Google Play and Apple podcasts. We seek interns who want to work side by side with industry experts to gain in-depth experience in writing, editing and interviewing. Some of our previous interns have gone on to work for NPR’s All Things Considered, NPR’s 1A, KNX-AM Los Angeles, WAND-TV, ESPN, ABC News, Disney and us.

Responsibilities:

· Brainstorm and develop new segment ideas for both shows.

· Interview authors and experts in a variety of fields.

· Research and write long-form stories for our two public affairs programs.

· Work side-by-side with the industry’s top producers, studio engineers and editors on radio pieces.

· Assist with social media posts for both shows on an ‘as needed’ basis.

Requirements:

· Incoming junior or senior with a major/minor in journalism who lives in the Chicago area and can come to our office.

· Excellent written/verbal skills – including grammar and proofreading.

· Hard-working with a professional demeanor, an eagerness to learn, and a high regard for deadlines.

· Completed coursework in broadcast journalism, and/or has extracurricular experience in scriptwriting for radio/audio.

Learning Objectives:

  • Be able to independently schedule and conduct advanced, longform interviews with experts and write an informative, focused script that displays multiple angles of a story and seamlessly incorporates several soundbites from interviews.
  • Gain practical experience in journalism, be able to identify and work with issues that arise with journalistic responsibility and ethics.
  • Advance writing skills applicable to all forms of journalism.
  • Produce several polished audio features with your name on it to add to your portfolio (LinkedIn, personal website, etc.)
